I am the author of several novels about life in Sand Canyon (Coyote Canyon in the novels) recommended for readers ages eight and up. Though set in the 1930s, they are timeless stories of the healing power of friendship woven with threads of Native California culture. The first book in the series, The Butterfly Basket, was inspired by the basket pictured below, woven in the 1920s by the talented Nuwä/Kawaiisu basket maker Rosie Hicks. This and the other two novels in the Coyote Canyon Series are available online under the author name C.A.Waldman (that’s me!) and in the Tehachapi Museum All three are illustrated by California artist Susan Hill. More information about the books and links for ordering can be found at my author website cawaldmanbooks.com.
Cindy – I can see how this exquisite basket serves as an inspiration to you for your book. Best wishes as you complete your project.

Thanks!
Cynthia – the basket is exquisite. And the story you wrote from the basket is just as beautiful!
Thanks, Annie! That’s exactly what I was trying to do, to weave a story as beautiful as that basket.
